Brew a smooth, malt-forward English-style brown ale with caramel and chocolate malt depth and gentle bitterness.
Makes 5 gallons of Brown Ale
All-grain recipe designed for brewers with an all-grain system
Ready to drink in about 4 weeks
Classic English-style brown ale
The driest, and the most sessionable
This is a malt driven beer with very little bitterness, and US-05 gives it a clean dry finish that keeps it drinking easily pint after pint. It adds nothing of its own, so the Chocolate malt and Special B do the talking.
Ferment at 64-79°F
Attenuation 78-82%
Flocculation Medium
Clean and neutral
Sweetest, maltiest, brightest
This attenuates less than any strain we stock, so the caramel and chocolate malt stay rich and the beer finishes properly sweet. Very high flocculation drops it crystal clear. It settles fast enough that it can finish early, so a warm rest at the end is time well spent.
Ferment at 65-68°F
Attenuation 63-70%
Flocculation Very High
Sweet, malty, very clear
Classic English malt character
1968 leans distinctly malty and finishes sweeter than US-05, which suits an English brown ale right down to the ground. It is extremely flocculent and drops bright quickly. A diacetyl rest before packaging is worth the wait.
Ferment at 64-72°F
Attenuation 67-71%
Flocculation High
Malty and sweet finishing
✅ Beginner-friendly with step-by-step brewing support
Flavor Profile & Beer Style
The Brown Ale is a classic dark ale with rich malt character and smooth drinkability. Caramel and chocolate malts provide roasted depth and gentle sweetness, while English Fuggle hops add mild bitterness and earthy balance. The result is a well-rounded brown ale that highlights malt flavor without becoming heavy or overly bitter.

How the Brewing Process Works
Brewing your Brown Ale follows a classic English ale brewing process:
Mash: Convert grain starches into fermentable sugars.
Sparge: Rinse the grains to collect sweet wort.
Boil: Add hops for mild bitterness and earthy balance.
Ferment: Ferment with English ale yeast until clean and fully attenuated.
Enjoy: Ready to drink in about 4 weeks
This recipe allows the malt character to shine while keeping the beer smooth and approachable.
New to Liquid Yeast?
Liquid yeast can deliver excellent fermentation performance and a wider range of strain options, but it’s a living, perishable product that requires a little extra care.
Liquid yeast may arrive warm. Ice packs help reduce heat exposure but do not guarantee cold arrival.
Refrigerate it when received and plan to brew as soon as possible.
We recommend adding an insulated mailer + ice pack to liquid yeast orders.
During May–September, dry yeast is strongly recommended due to higher shipping temperatures.
Liquid yeast is final sale and cannot be replaced due to heat exposure during transit.
