This Vermont Maple Porter 5 Gallon Beer Recipe Kit helps you brew a rich, malt-forward porter with real Vermont maple syrup, layered chocolate and coffee notes, and a smooth finish that is ready to drink in about five weeks.
Makes 5 gallons (approximately 48–54 bottles) of Vermont Maple Porter
Ready to drink in about 5 weeks
Maple porter with rich malt character
Includes real Vermont maple syrup
Fast, dry, and maple as aroma
Maple syrup is almost entirely fermentable, so it raises the alcohol and dries the beer rather than sweetening it. S-04 attenuates furthest of the five and pushes the same way, leaving maple as aroma over a crisp finish. It also ferments and clears fast.
Ferment at 64-79°F
Attenuation 74-82%
Flocculation High
Fast, fruity, clears well
Rich, malty and properly English
The Chocolate and Black malt stay rich and the beer drinks like a traditional porter with maple over the top. It settles fast, which is worth knowing on a long primary. A diacetyl rest at the end is time well spent.
Ferment at 64-72°F
Attenuation 67-71%
Flocculation High
Malty and sweet finishing
Rich, round, roast forward
Caramunich, Chocolate and Black malt is precisely the case this strain was made for, and it complements all three rather than competing. It leaves enough body to carry maple through to the finish, and the gravity is comfortable territory for it.
Ferment at 62-72°F
Attenuation 71-75%
Flocculation Medium
Made for roast and caramel
Quiet fruit under the maple
1084 handles heavily roasted grain better than most ale strains, which is what this recipe asks for, and it adds a quiet fruitiness that sits well alongside maple. Keep it cool if you want the maple and the roast leading instead.
Ferment at 62-72°F
Attenuation 71-75%
Flocculation Medium
Built for dark beer
The fullest and maltiest
This leaves more malt behind than anything else here, so the Chocolate and Black malt stay rich under the maple. The maple itself ferments out to aroma whichever yeast you pick. Very high flocculation drops it clear quickly.
Ferment at 65-68°F
Attenuation 63-70%
Flocculation Very High
Sweet, malty, very clear

Flavor Profile & Beer Style
The Vermont Maple Porter is a rich, malt-forward porter with layers of caramel, chocolate, and coffee flavor. Real Vermont maple syrup adds subtle sweetness and depth, enhancing the malt profile without overpowering it.
Northern Brewer hops contribute mild woody bitterness, balancing the beer and allowing the maple character to come through smoothly on the finish.
What’s Included in the Recipe Kit
This 5-gallon recipe kit includes all the ingredients needed to brew Vermont Maple Porter at home:
16 oz Vermont Maple Syrup Bottle
6.25 lb Traditional Dark Dry Malt Extract
Northern Brewer (Bittering & Flavor) Hop Packet
Caramel 60, Chocolate & Black Malts Steeping Grains
Grain Steeping Bag
Your choice of yeast (dry yeast, liquid yeast, or no yeast if you have your own)
Note: Brewing equipment is not included. This kit is designed for brewers who already own a 5-gallon brewing setup.
How the Brewing Process Works
Brewing your Vermont Maple Porter follows a traditional porter brewing process with a maple syrup addition:
Brew: Steep specialty grains, boil the wort, and add hops according to the recipe
Ferment: Ferment with ale yeast until clean and fully developed
Optional Step: Add Vermont maple syrup during fermentation as instructed
Enjoy: Ready to drink in about 5 weeks
Allowing an extra week of fermentation helps fully incorporate the maple syrup while maintaining a smooth, balanced finish.
New to Liquid Yeast?
Liquid yeast can deliver excellent fermentation performance and a wider range of strain options, but it’s a living, perishable product that requires a little extra care.
Liquid yeast may arrive warm. Ice packs help reduce heat exposure but do not guarantee cold arrival.
Refrigerate it when received and plan to brew as soon as possible.
We recommend adding an insulated mailer + ice pack to liquid yeast orders.
During May–September, dry yeast is strongly recommended due to higher shipping temperatures.
Liquid yeast is final sale and cannot be replaced due to heat exposure during transit.
Homebrewers who enjoy brewing seasonal or specialty styles
Drinkers who prefer rich, smooth beers with subtle sweetness
Because it’s brewed in larger volume, this kit is well suited for cooler-weather brewing, sharing with friends, or keeping a dark beer on hand throughout the season.
